Kalpana Patankar, MD, MAc, Dipl.OM, practiced pediatrics in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the suburbs for over three decades, first in private practice and later with a multispecialty group practice in Phoenixville. When Western medical practice shifted to protocols and algorithms in the late 1990’s, Dr. Patankar decided to augment her skills by studying acupuncture, which aligned with her approach to see her patients and their circumstances through a more individualized and holistic lens. After earning her Master’s degree in Acupuncture from Tai Sophia Institute in Maryland in 2003, Dr. Patankar founded Traditional Acupuncture Plus to provide acupuncture to her local community. While building a successful private practice, she also served as an adjunct faculty member at the Won Institute in the Acupuncture Department from 2005-2019 and graduated from the Won Institute’s inaugural class of Chinese Herbal Medicine in 2014. Challenges in her personal life provided the incentive to practice meditation and study Won Buddhist principles. She and her family have benefited greatly from the calm and steady guidance of the Won Buddhist ministry.

Dr. Patankar transferred Traditional Acupuncture Plus to her partner Jackie Lacava, L.OM, Dipl.OM, MSACN, in 2019, and she sees patients at this thriving practice on a limited basis. Her primary focus now is serving as a Board member to help the Won Institute become a vibrant resource for educating practitioners in healing arts while serving the community from a new and significantly expanded campus in Warminster Township. She maintains a deep personal commitment to the Institute that she has come to know and love so well as both a student and a faculty member.

Major shifts in her personal life and the global suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic are her principal motives to shift gears after half a century of medical practice and move toward a life of deeper self-reflection and serving her community in new ways.
