Earlier this month, the Won Institute of Graduate Studies had the exciting opportunity to attend the Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR) Conference in Newport Beach, California, from April 3 to 6. As a proud Tiger Level Sponsor and exhibitor, we were thrilled to connect with leaders in the field, exchange ideas, and showcase the cutting-edge research being done by members of our community.

What made this trip especially meaningful? Several of our faculty members were honored to present their original research—projects they completed while they were students in our Doctor of Acupuncture Completion Track. Seeing their work recognized on a national stage was both a proud moment for the Institute and a powerful reminder of the impact of acupuncture research in today’s healthcare landscape.

Meet the Presenters

🧑‍⚕️ Dr. Ann Kirby | Efficacy of Acupuncture in Underserved Rural Communities in the United States

Dr. Kirby’s research highlighted how acupuncture can support rural populations, offering affordable and effective care in areas where healthcare access is often limited.

🧠 Dr. David Dagg-Murry | Acupuncture Treatment for Substance Use Disorders: Cost-Effectiveness and A Call to Action

With a focus on public health, Dr. Dagg-Murry explored the financial and therapeutic benefits of acupuncture as a treatment for substance use disorders, urging for broader integration into recovery programs.

Quote: “I have worked to support people recovering from substance use disorders for 30 years.  Every person I have met wants to improve, become stronger, and live a fulfilling life. Preventing relapse gets people back to their lives. Acupuncture is an essential tool in relapse prevention.”

👐 Dr. Michael Keane & Dr. Janet Leidy | Gua Sha is an Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization Technique

This collaborative study examined Gua Sha’s therapeutic potential through modern soft tissue techniques.

A Strong Showing for the Won Community

The energy and enthusiasm at the SAR Conference were contagious, and it was inspiring to see how acupuncture research continues to evolve and gain traction in academic and clinical spaces. We’re incredibly proud of our faculty for leading by example and contributing meaningful insights that advance the field.
