Vision/Sound: Allentown's 80's Arts Scene Revisited

A celebration of downtown Allentown’s 1980s arts and culture scene and synonymous radio airwaves revolution — with focus on the period 1978-1988. Events include:

  • Concurrent exhibitions of work by 12 local visual artists of the period.
  • Sound installations of WMUH-FM broadcasts from the era featuring community programmers and local band recordings.
  • Live retro concert. Bands, performers and artists of the era are being prompted to schedule additional concerts, workshops and special events at local venues during June and July as part of the Vision/Sound experience.

WHEN: Summer 2017 — June 14 to August 2

WHERE: Collaborative/concurrent events at four venues:

(EXHIBITION ) MARTIN ART GALLERY, Baker Center for the Arts/Muhlenberg College

  • June 14 to August 2. Reception Wednesday June 14 at 5–7
  • Retrospective exhibition of visual works by: Linda Cummings, Ray DiCecco, Mark Klee, Jessica Lenard, John Lotte, Frances Metcalf Weaver, Kenn Michael, Ted Ormai, Barnaby Ruhe, Barbara Tiberio, Jett Ulaner Sarachek, Greg Weaver
  • Sound installation — Audio streaming of WMUH-FM broadcasts from the era featuring community programmers and local band recordings
  • Vintage event posters and memorabilia on display

(EXHIBITION) THE BAUM SCHOOL OF ART

  • July 13 to August 2. Reception “Third” Thursday July 20 at 5–7
  • Recent work by artists from the retrospective exhibition: Cummings, DiCecco, Lenard, Lotte, Michael, Ormai, Ruhe, Tiberio, Ulaner Sarachek
  • Sound installation — Audio streaming of WMUH-FM broadcasts from the era featuring community programmers and local band recordings

(PANEL DISCUSSION) ALLENTOWN ART MUSEUM OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY

  • Thursday, July 20 at 5–6 with Geo Gehman. Reception follows at 6 at The Baum School of Art

(LIVE CONCERT) THE ALTERNATIVE GALLERY

  • Saturday, July 15 at 8:00. $10, no advance sales. Beer/wine available. 707 N 4th St.
  • Current lineup includes Ronnie Rock & The TrendSetters; Dave Goddess & friends play Daddy Licks unplugged; Roman & The Heard; members of The Creatures and The Vultures
  • 1980s WMUH programmers spin discs between sets. Sally Sattelight and Neil Hever MCs
