Biochemistry of Plants

This course satisfies the Biology or Chemistry corequisite for the Doctor of Acupuncture Program.

Course Description:

This course introduces students to the relationship between the science of plant chemistry and herbal medicine. Students study the basic principles of phytochemistry and learn common chemical compounds located within plants of the Materia Medica.  Topics explored include cannabinoids and pain management, essential oil chemistry and healing, and the chemical compounds in plants that act as medicinal agents.

Eligibility:

To register, students must have completed an accredited Master of Acupuncture program or be currently enrolled in a Master of Acupuncture program.

Course Costs

$525/credit + $250 for fees. Payment plans are available through the Registrar's Office.

Meet The Instructor


Richard Mandelbaum, RH

BA, Wesleyan University

Richard Mandelbaum (he, him) is a clinical herbalist and teacher of botany and herbal medicine, with a private practice in the Southern Catskills, NY. He is a founding partner, director, and teacher at the ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism in New York City. He received his BA from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT and Advanced Herbal Training Program certificate from the Sage Mountain program in VT.

For students who take CHP632 prior to enrolling in the CHP program, they will have their CHP 632 tuition credited toward their CHP tuition.
